Ioannis Miltoni Angli Pro Populo Anglicano Defensio,1652

Milton's two "Defenses of the English people," both in Latin, were published in 1650 and 1654. This is a copy of the first Defense, directed against Salmasius (Claude de Saumaise, 1588-1653), a French scholar commissioned by Charles II (in exile at the Hague) to compose a defense of Charles I (the Defensio Regia pro Carolo Primo,1649) and an attack on Oliver Cromwell's government. Milton's response is a vicious ad hominen attack on Saumaise, and is typical of the political polemic of the time.
