Albrecht von Johansdorf

(Typical Minne Situation)

Ich vant âne huote
die vil minneclîchen stân.
sâ dô sprach diu guote
"waz welt ir sô eine her gegân?"
"frouwe, ez ist alsô geschehen."
"saget, war umbe sît ir her? des sult ir mir verjehen."
I found my lady all alone,
standing without a chaperone.
She said, so only I could hear,
"What do you think you're doing here?"
"Dear Lady, I just happened by."
"Don't lie to me, and don't hold back, but tell me why!"
"Mînen senden kumber
klage ich iu, vil liebe frouwe mîn."
"wê, waz saget ir tumber?
ir mugt iuwer klage wol lâzen sîn."
"frouwe, ichn mac ir niht enbern."
"sô wil ich in tûsent jâren niemer iuch gewern."
"My pain and longing come from you;
complain is all I ever do."
"Alas, you stupid man, you'd best
leave off complaining; let it rest."
"Without you, Lady, I can't live."
"My favors in a thousand years I'll never give."
"Neinâ, küniginne!
daz mîn dienest sô iht sî verlorn!"
"ir sît âne sinne,
daz ir bringet mich in solhen zorn."
"frouwe, iur haz tuot mir den tôt."
"wer hât iuch, vil lieber man, betwungen ûf die nôt?"
"Oh, no, my queen, please don't maintain
that all my service is in vain!"
"You must be crazy; all you'll do
is make me angrier at you."
"Oh Mistress, that will be my death."
"Who forced you, you dear man, to waste your breath?"
"Daz hât iuwer schœne
die ir hât, vil minniclîchez wîp."
"iuwer süezen dœne
wolten krenken mînen stæten lîp."
"frouwe, niene welle got."
"werte ich iuch, des hetet ir êre; sô wær mîn der spot."
"Your beauty did that, Lady mine,"
and all the glory that is thine."
"These honeyed tones seem meant to be
offensive to my dignity."
"Oh, Lady, may Our Lord forefend!"
"To grant your plea would honor you and me offend."
"Lât mich noch geniezen
daz ich iu von herzen ie was holt."
"iuch mac wol verdriezen
az ir iuwer wortel gegen mir bolt."
"dunket iuch mîn rede niht guot?"
"jâ hât si beswæret dicke mînen stæten muot."
"Then let me hear that you could find
a place for me in heart or mind."
"I wonder, will you ever cease
to bleat at me, and give me peace?"
"Is then my plea so very bad?"
"Indeed, it makes my steadfast soul so very sad."
"Ich bin ouch vil stæte,
ob ir ruochet mir der wârheit jehen."
"volget mîner ræte,
lât die bete diu niemer mac geschehen."
"sol ich alsô sîn gewert?"
"got der wer iuch andeswâ des ir an mich dâ gert."
"I too am steadfast, firm and true
if I may speak the truth to you."
"Take my advice, forget your plea;
it cannot be fulfilled by me."
"Then no reward will be my due?"
"God will provide a different kind of prize for you."
"Sol mich dan mîn singen
und mîn dienest gegen iu niht vervân?"
"iu sol wol gelingen:
âne lôn sô sult ir niht bestân."
"wie meinet ir daz, frouwe guot?"
"daz ir deste werder sît und dâ bî hôchgemuot."
"Will all my songs then be ignored,
my service be without reward?"
"Not so! Success will come your way:
you will receive a worthy pay."
"Explain that, Lady, if you can!"
"Your love will make you nobler, and a better man."
