Strategic Plan

Emory College’s vision is to become a national model for combining the personal engagement and excellent teaching of a traditional liberal arts college with the ground-breaking scholarship and resources of a major research university.  To bring an even greater Emory within reach, we will support and sustain the following strategic initiatives: increase merit scholarships and need-based support for the nation’s top students; hire 100 new faculty and build a commensurate staff; create an outstanding social and physical environment; sharpen the intellectual focus of undergraduate life; and invest in infrastructure that supports the teaching and research missions of the College.  In addition, the College will strengthen those disciplines at the heart of the liberal arts curriculum and advance interdisciplinary programs to the point of genuine distinction.

Traditions and Transformations: A Plan to Guide the Future of Emory College was developed in consultation with a steering committee, consisting of representatives from all divisions of the Arts and Sciences, commissioned by the Dean of the College and the Executive Committee of the College in February 2004. The Strategic Planning Committee met regularly over the course of more than a year to reflect on the future of the College and had extensive discussions with the College faculty in both informal sessions and organized groups.  Earlier drafts of this plan have been discussed with department chairs and program directors at day-long retreats.  We believe this version of the plan synthesizes our original vision with the broadened perspective we have gained from our many conversations with faculty, students, and staff.

Because we recognize that strategic plans work best when they are living documents, flexible enough to respond to new opportunities and changing circumstances, the College will work with the Faculty Governance Committee to engage in continuous planning. We will gather the data necessary to assess our situation regularly, and we will plan to review and update our plan on a yearly basis.  We invite your further comments on the plan.  If you have suggestions, please forward them to Kim Loudermilk, Senior Associate Dean for Academic Planning (klouder@emory.edu or 7-9517).

We want to thank the members of the Strategic Planning Committee for their hard work on this project. Those members include: Jim Grimsley, Pam Hall, George Jones, Thomas D. Lancaster, Cristine Levenduski, Lanny Liebeskind, Kim Loudermilk, David Lynn, Rosemary Magee, Eleanor Main, Robert McCauley, Richard Rubinson, Leslie Taylor, and Elaine Walker. Each of these committee members gave generously of their time, their intellect and their creativity to pull together a plan that will guide the College in the years to come.

We welcome your thoughts on the strategic plan, and we hope that you will find the document describes a compelling future for Emory College.

Best,

Robert A. Paul
Dean of Emory College, Faculty of Arts and Sciences

Micheal Giles
