Mission

The mission of the College concerning the management of grants is to promote externally funded research and related activities by facilitating successful relationships between College faculty and the federal, private and state organizations that support and sustain their work. To best serve the needs of faculty and the University, the College will provide research administration services that are both customer and compliance focused.

To be recognized internally and externally as a service-oriented office that proactively facilitates the pursuit of sponsored and unsponsored research.

To foster the values of teamwork and problem solving as an integral part of the external funding process.

To encourage faculty inquiry into new and emerging fields and support interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research alliances.

To increase the submission rate and competitiveness of grant and contract applications within Emory College.

To ensure compliance with all policies, regulations and procedures (including university, college, state, federal, individual sponsors) related to research and external funding of Emory College’s sponsored projects.

Goals

1. Facilitate partnership(s) and improved communication with faculty, the Office of Sponsored Programs and University administrators.

  • Liaise with committees responsible for oversight of human subjects, animal subjects, and environmental safety.
  • Identify intellectual property issues and contractual obligations associated with research grants and contracts.
  • Provide compliance oversight and verification for the College’s sponsored research activities
  • Liaise with external agencies, such as the Georgia Research Alliance, Georgia Cancer Coalition, and EmTech Bio.
  • Consolidate, coordinate and facilitate proposal review and routing with other University offices to reduce duplication of effort and streamline processes.
  • Provide final pre-submission proposal review for budget accuracy, research/cost accounting, technology transfer, and subcontracts in a timely and professional manner.
  • Promote and facilitate the tools and methods for electronic submission of proposals to federal agencies.

2. Partner with the Senior Associate Dean of Faculty Office and the Office for Foundations and Corporate Relations to provide expert assistance and advice to faculty and departments related to the identification, development, preparation, and submission of proposals.

  • Partner with faculty in developing appropriate concept statements and research summaries for presentation to potential sponsors.
  • Assist in the development of high-quality proposals that meet sponsor criteria.
  • Maintain a faculty interest database and alert faculty to opportunities in their field(s).
  • Routinely offer general and discipline-specific workshops on grants administration, funding sources, and proposal writing.
  • Disseminate information to faculty on funding sources and programs, agency policies, and other research and sponsored projects topics.
  • Maintain a web site with links to discipline-specific funding databases, funding sources and programs, and time-urgent information.

3. Promote responsibility and accountability of grants activity to both the University and the external sponsors of the College’s programs.

  • Coordinate and maintain current database of college data that is routinely requested in grant proposals (e.g., faculty funding, publications, student recruitment and retention information).
  • Serve as a central repository of College-specific data to facilitate accurate analysis of research activities and to support University-wide strategic planning.
  • Provide training and education of faculty and staff on budget preparation, guidelines, rules and regulations.
